Operations notes at Symphony Hall
Supplies ~ chemicals ~ paper consumables
List of supplies to keep handy ~ dish detergent, Ajax, sanitizing cleaner, TOWELS, general surface cleaner ~ KITCHEN STUFF ~ coffee (reg & decaf), creamer, sugar, stir sticks
Cleaners and Chemicals ~ use and storage
- Detco Quick Mop floor mopping compound ~ 4 oz (1/2 coffee cup)
fill mop bucket to second tier marking on one end
- General surface cleaners ~ we have some that looks like, and serves also as window cleaner and Orange Glow. The orange Glow can be used on the varnished doors and most other ledge surfaces and restroom counters.
- Pledge furniture polish ~ wood doors - spray on cloth and buff to a smooth shiny finish ~ work the Pledge into the cloth makes a good dust wipe ~ do not apply directly on railings
- Dust Mop Treatment spray ~ Use only on the floor handle dust mop. Spray on and allow to set awhile - overnight if possible. If not, apply and work in by taking it off the handle ~ rollin it up and squeeze it in. Use Pledge or Endust for all other dusting rails etc.
- Lysol Linen scent Spray disinfectant ~ IMPORTANT CAUTION ~ NOT TO BE USED AS AIR FRESHENER ~ the airborn chemical used is capable of causing sudden and catastrophic respiratory distress in some individuals. This chemical must NEVER be used as an air freshener, and should only be applied to surfaces and only well in advance of any public arriving ~ used for bathroom countertops and toilets (in that order. After cleaning toilets that towel should go to the outgoing laundry bag ( we have one of those)
- Freezer spray ~ FLAMMABLE AND SKIN CONTACT HAZARD removes chewing gum and candle wax from anything ~ use in short blasts only, no more is usually needed, and besides this stuff is almost $10 a can. It will last a long time if used frugally. This item is also quite flammable and potentially explosive ~ be sure to always store it on the high shelf in the maintenance closet or in the cabinet by the freezer
- Woolite Carpet cleaner and 'GONE' Spot Stain remover ~ for light maintenance ~ never use stain remover before you have first thoroughly clean the spot ~ otherwise you may just spresd the stain around ~ (trust me)
- Ajax (Comet, Old Dutch) ~ mainly for sinks and drinking fountains, and ovens. occasionally need to use CLR on drinking fountains ~ Be careful with this or any other cleaners containing Chlorine especially over carpet and upholstery
- OOPS! latex paint cleanup ~ FLAMMABLE ~ used to clean up small paint spills ~ other spilled glues - tape residue etc. ~ use carefully - not for use on latex painted walls ~ use with caution anywhere
- Markers are considered Hazardous Materials in Symphony Center and are stored accordingly - not to be left in the reach of children or 9th graders
- Crystal Clean ~ Chandelier cleaner
This is a great crystal cleaner we use to clean the large chandeliers at Symphony Center. It is advertised as a spray & drip dry, but works quickest with a little help from a lint-free polish rag. Give a light spray - then wipe each crystal quickly and lightly to break the dust layer - then spray and drip dry as directed.

Paper towels and tissues
- Preference Ultra 210 paper towels ~ order from Simms ~ there should be a spare case (in the closet at the top of the stairs) besides the case that is open (in the Egypt closet). If there is less than half a case ahead, long weekends with two or three large events can risk running out
- Toilet paper ~ also from Simms ~ comes in a very large case (also in the 5th floor stairway closet) usually get more when there are 12-15 rolls left ~ Simms has just switched to a new supplier, so no more of the odd overlapping toilet paper we've been getting
- Kleenex ~ rectangular box for the handicap bathroom and dressing rooms (most of the time ~ they get forgotten sometimes in the off-season) The cube style goes in the ladies room under the cover ~ normally have at least one of each in reserve
- Napkins are only stocked by the Auxilliary for their purposes, although there ar often leftover napkins from evemts that are left in the drink service area
- Roll paper towels are handy to have around the kitchen, but we don't really stock them. Most jobs are best handled with regular washable fabric towels we maintain anyway. Whatever you do, DO NOT use the tri-fold towels we stock for the restrooms, for regular cleaning.
- Trash can liners ~ Currently we are using black 39 gallon bags for the black six-side containers ~ Family Dollar on Garriott of Dollar General sometimes carries the same brand. Smaller than 39 gallon won't fit.
